It can be overwhelming to keep up with the rate at which media outlets publish news. Newsparks distill some of the most pressing issues about climate change, energy, and sustainability in the news into an easily digestible format that enables classroom discussion. While each Newspark will focus on a different topic in the news, the overall structure remains the same.
Each Newspark will open with a general introduction of the topic and summary of essential facts. We then provide a list of discussion questions aimed at provoking deeper inquiry into both the issue itself and how the media has represented the issue in its news coverage. Finally, we provide a sampling of links to various news sources and excerpts of relevant perspectives in the issue at hand. With each Newspark, we aim not only to engage students more fully with current environmental affairs, but also to enable students to become more critical and perceptive consumers of media.
