3. That Ship Has Sailed!

2008 studentsLook for an exciting new educational opportunity from eCards to engage your students, peer-to-peer, in exploring the Arctic later this fall. While weathering rough seas, the 28 international Cape Farewell students who sailed September 7–20th aboard the MV Academik Shokalskly managed to create eCards about their Arctic experience. They also worked on art and science projects and creating personal blogs and videos. This collection of unique eCards, along with the research conducted during the voyage, will contribute to a new multi-media Topic Resource Centre for eCards.

Visit the Cape Farewell website to meet the students on the voyage and see their blogs, videos and photographs. Also see which Canadian schools are working with the students on their projects.

6. New Curriculum Links for eCards

eCards buttonTeachers tell us that eCards works in many grades and subject areas. We are now developing new material, supporting activities and assessment rubrics for a number of subjects and grades in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia, with links for other provinces soon to follow.

Ontario teachers, look for curriculum connections for eCards for each of these grades and subjects this fall:

  • Grade 8 Geography
  • Grade 9 Geography
  • Grade 10 Civics
  • Language Arts, particularly Media Literacy
Like the Ontario Grade 7 Geography material that launched eCards, these resources will be developed by teachers for teachers. Keep an eye on www.greenlearning.ca/ecards! We will post this new information under Curriculum Connections as it becomes available.

7. What are Teachers Saying About GreenLearning?

We extend a big thank you to the many teachers who completed GreenLearning evaluations last year. We are already using your feedback to improve our programs. We also appreciated hearing about what you really like about GreenLearning:

GL surveyeCards "Definitely enhanced learning. They had a focus, were motivated and had a sense of purpose. They are a lot more knowledgeable than if I had just presented to them."

"The students were very engaged and quiet completing their eCards. I like being able to monitor their progress along the way [and] the information being available without doing a ton of researching."

EnerAction — "The lessons were brilliant."

"Really impressed with the materials. Wish more teachers would come to workshops."

Solar Oven Challenge "Students loved building their ovens and testing them out, and certainly baking with them."

Many of the teachers who register with GreenLearning hear about us from other teachers. To tell another teacher about GreenLearning, send them an email with this link for registration: http://www.greenlearning.ca/register. Or forward your colleague a copy of this newsletter.
