Composting is nature's way of recycling, and can be used to recycle organic waste at home and at work. At least 50% of our total waste stream could probably be composted. Microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi break down the organic materials, producing a rich, soil-like product called humus.
Humus can then be used to improve soil texture and fertility in home gardening and landscaping and it can be used on indoor plants.
Backyard composting is easy and is a great way to improve your garden soil.

Composting reduces the amount of organic matter headed for our landfills, thus reducing the amount of methane given off by anaerobic decomposition. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas and is 21 more times more harmful than carbon dioxide. About 1.2 million tonnes of methane are released from
Canadian landfills each year.
Whether you live in an apartment, work in an office, or have a house with a backyard, you can begin composting.
